Smalltown Poets "Under The New Sun" Album Review

October 16, 2012
Review by: Iain Moss
Release Date: 10/16/12

Christian Rock group Smalltown Poets return with a brand new EP entitled “Under The New Sun,” the first non-holiday album in 8 years since the release of their 2004 album “It’s Later Than It’s Ever Been” through BEC Records/EMI.

The Atlanta, GA based quintet reformed in 2011 to release their first official Christmas album “Smalltown Poets Christmas” and, as much fun as they had reworking Christmas songs, are said to be relishing a return to their musical roots with “Under The New Sun.” The band is known for crafting lyric-intensive songs from the ground up, quite often turning a few phrases and sneaking in a few puns but, most importantly, inviting the listener to explore the musical landscape with their own imagination.

The title of the EP “Under The New Sun” is taken from an old Villanelle song “May Day” (Villanelle being a previous incarnation of Smalltown Poets). The lyric “under the new sun” sums up many of the themes on the new release including death, rebirth, renewal, restoration and resurrection.

The 7-track EP opens with the title track, an atmospheric instrumental which, with its spacious guitars, eager chord progression and piano melodies, sonically paints the hope of a new dawn. It sets a mood of tranquility and encourages the worries and stresses of the world to fade away. After the peace instilled in the opener, “Turn Around” is sure to get your heart racing as it uses mile-a-minute word pictures to take you on a roller-coaster ride to a bullfight and back again through space. “Charlie Brown’s Lament” follows the classically familiar relationship of a boy and his dog with Smalltown Poets fetching the irony to tell a timeless story in their own unique manner.

The reflective yet driving “Grace Is a Song”, with the resurrection story as its backdrop, is a celebration of hope and leads beautifully into the worship classic “Jesus I Come.” The song takes on new life as it’s given the Smalltown Poets treatment. The melodic undertone combined with Michael Johnston’s soothing voice creates the perfect atmosphere to worship our Lord and Savior freely. The lyrics of the song are inspired by Psalm 130:1, “Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord” and Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

New territory is broached with “The Ballad of Time and Eternity”, an Aesop-esque story including lyrics written for the lead singer’s six year old daughter which are meant to take on new meaning when she turns sixteen. The EP is rounded out with Smalltown Poet’s twist on the standard gospel song “I’ll Fly Away”, which evoked some of the finer qualities of Jars of Clay.

Whether you listen to music as a backdrop or prefer to dive right into the heart of the song (or even like to sing along at the top of your lungs), every track on this EP meets the challenge of transcending the ordinary. Smalltown Poets have once again crafted a masterpiece guaranteed to have you pressing the replay button repeatedly. Repeat after me: "Play; Rewind; Repeat!"

Prodigal Son Enters Soundscan Charts At #18

Rap artist Prodigal Son enters the Soundscan sales chart at #18 after outstanding first week sales for his brand new album, "Deeper Than Church." The album is being distributed physically and digitally by CLG Distribution.

Prodigal Son has branded a movement in the gospel industry named NEW ERA. Prodigal Son say’s he and his HOLY-wood Records team will continue to bring a new sound to the gospel genre as a whole. The title of this new cd DEEPER THAN CHURCH continues to introduce this NEW ERA sound from HOLY-wood Records, as they bring a blend of music for anyone to enjoy who purchases this Groundbreaking, Impactful cd. with music production from top producers who have produced for the likes of RICK ROSS, WALE, WACKA FLACKA FLAME, YMCMB, WIZ KHALIFA and more with features from Klaridy, Rochelle Saunders, Tri-Beezy & Red Fur . The Lyrical message on this NEW ERA album is to uplift, encourage and challenge each listener to stop being so judgmental to one another, as well explained on the songs REALITY, ON MY WAY WAY, to the songs that touch emotions of wrong doing within our body of believers that need to be corrected as explained in the songs EZY MONEY, DEEPER THAN CHURCH and the media favorite AS THE STORY GOES.

Prodigal Son says “ I wrote this album during my three year grieving period of losing my mother, father and grandmother one year apart. I was actually able to look at life from a different vantage point, much like many of those whom I ministered too on the streets and inside of prison walls, so I consulted w/ GOD and made a cd from their vantage point. The only reason I did not stop doing music totally after my families demise is because my mother’s very last words to me were, NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS NEVER GIVE UP, and those words birthed DEEPER THAN CHURCH. Many don’t understand my style and that’s ok in a sense, because those who get it, get me because we are alike, so those are the ones I reach out too with hopes that others realize that I speak and write from a perspective that no one else has seen, and that’s because its my REAL LIFE I write about.. I really don’t have any comparisons to my music because i really believe i’m creating a sound that will sit in it’s own category”. Managed now by Debbie King (Daughter of Boxing promoter Don King) Prodigal Son says I see clear skies ahead as I prepare Tours, Deeper Than Church Pt. 2, and a new autobiography in the works named $75 and a Dream.

HOLY-wood Records has been around for the past eight years and Prodigal Son describes how he came up with the name ”HOLY-wood Records. See celebrities go to HOLLYWOOD for their fortune, fame, status, ect but as believers we go to the Throne of GOD (YHWH). We just need to seek first the Kingdom Of God and all things will be added unto us, as described in Matthew 6:33. So instead of HOLLYWOOD I have created HOLY-wood Records Films/Music and Books. Pre-order Deeper Than Church now on iTunes, AmazonMP3, or on many other digital retail outlets.

NewReleaseTuesday.com Launches New Christian Music App for iPad and iPhone

NewReleaseTuesday.com (NRT), the largest Christian music site online, continues to push forward in mobile app development with the announcement of the site's third application, “NRT Weekly,” designed for Apple’s industry leading mobile iOS platform. The app is available now as a free download through Apple’s iTunes Store and is optimized for the iPad as well as available for the iPhone and the iPod Touch. The app was developed in partnership with Word Entertainment—an entertainment company that represents some of the top names and brands in Christian music—and will feature exclusive ads throughout NRT Weekly, highlighting the latest projects and messages from Word Entertainment, as well as various national awareness campaigns throughout the year.

“NRT Weekly is the culmination of the hard work our entire team has done over the past five years as we've sought to build the best Christian music site online,” states NRT founder, Kevin McNeese. “Our previous app, NRT Mobile, is more informative and static, connecting to our massive Christian artist and album databases, whereas NRT Weekly is a content rich app, updating every Tuesday with new content to explore. It is a natural progression of what we do and a great way for the casual, or even hardcore, Christian music fan to quickly digest the latest that NRT and the world of Christian music has to offer each week."

Adam Zinke, Director of Online Marketing at Word Entertainment, said, “As an entertainment company, we are always looking for ways to expand our reach through new and innovative technologies. NewReleaseTuesday.com has once again delivered a well-designed mobile experience for the Christian music fan. We are honored to be a part of this vision and help drive it forward."

Released almost three years to the date since NRT Mobile’s launch—which has since been downloaded more than 85,000 times—NRT Weekly seeks to dynamically share with fans what's new in Christian music each week. Through exclusive content, special features and rich media, Christian music fans will be able to explore new releases, watch the latest music videos, connect with their favorite artists and read interviews and other exclusive content found nowhere else.

In addition to the latest information on new releases, NRT Weekly will give users mobile access to the site’s popular new release schedule promoting what's releasing in future weeks as well as connecting fans to NRT Radio, a 24/7 Christian Music radio station that plays over 8 hours of new music with zero repeats.

“It's been my experience that God will bring together the right team in His timing,” says McNeese. “We feel that NRT Weekly aligns perfectly with Word Entertainment's mission to reach music fans in a dynamic and innovative way. One of NRT’s main objectives is to introduce people to music that changes lives and NRT Weekly will be a true extension of that vision for both companies. With over 25 billion applications downloaded through iTunes, and the recent release of the third generation iPad, there is huge potential to bring positive music to this platform, and I can’t think of a better partner than Word Entertainment to help us bring this application to market.”

"We are truly approaching this as an evolution of the digital magazine," continues McNeese. "NRT Weekly is designed for quick consumption and updated for free every single Tuesday with content you can't get anywhere else. We can't wait to connect with Christian Music fans in this way.”

More information about NRT Weekly, along with the long-awaited launch of NRT Mobile for the Android platform, can be found at newreleasetuesday.com/nrtmobile.

The sampler features “Small Rebellions” and “Body and Wine” from Jars of Clay; “Mind Games” and “Haunted” from LEAGUES; and “O, Theo” and “Until The Dawn Appears” (featuring Thad Cockrell of LEAGUES) from Matthew Perryman Jones. All selections are available for free download, with tips being collected for Blood:Water Mission (www.bloodwatermission.com).

Jars of Clay, made up of members Dan Haseltine (vocals), Charlie Lowell (keyboards), Steve Mason (guitars) and Matt Odmark (guitars), launched its breakout career with the multi-format Hit “Flood” in 1995. Since then, it has amassed more than 6 million in career sales (five Gold, two Platinum and one Multi-Platinum certification), three GRAMMY Awards, an American Music Award nod, three GMA Dove Awards, and BMI honors for songwriting as well as performing. The group also claims 17 #1 radio singles, numerous film credits, and has headlined thousands of sold-out shows and festivals. The band’s GRAMMY-nominated 10th album, The Long Fall Back To Earth, was recently followed by its compelling, community-minded project, Jars of Clay Presents The Shelter.

In advance of their highly anticipated full-length debut (summer 2012), emerging band LEAGUES (Tyler Burkum, Thad Cockrell, Jeremy Lutito) will also be performing selections from their debut self-titled EP, which was recorded in Nashville with engineer Vance Powell (Jack White, Raconteurs, The Dead Weather). In the band’s own words, “LEAGUES is a collective of three guys that believe music is a gift. We are all still amazed where it comes from and that we can take part of it. The decision to start the band was made under the simple idea of ‘let’s just show up.’ Show up we did and this is the music that happened. All the music was played, written and produced together with the idea that beauty is the driving force and these songs are not only for us but everyone.”

Critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Matthew Perryman Jones, whose catalog includes his stellar debut, Throwing Punches In The Dark (2006), followed by Swallow The Sea (2008), featuring “Save You,” returns with Land Of The Living, releasing May 29. Jones has shared stages with Shawn Colvin, Paula Cole and Patty Griffin, among others, and is a member of the collective “Ten Out of Tenn.” His music has been featured multiple times on “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Private Practice,” “Bones” and “One Tree Hill.”

New Music From "The Beautiful Refrain" Out Tomorrow

The Beautiful Refrain’s debut EP, Redemption:Daylight, tomorrow, March 17, 2012. The band will be celebrating the release with a hometown album release show Sunday, March 18 at the Blue Nile in Harrisonburg, VA.

The Beautiful Refrain got their start at Aletheia Church, while the band was attending James Madison University. Although they started writing songs to be performed at Aletheia, their music has proved to resonate with a much larger audience, and has struck a chord with both listeners and worship leaders across the nation.

Their debut single “Page One” is on the verge of a debut on the Christian rock charts, and the band is finding fans with radio networks across the country.

"After the first three lines of this song I was hooked,” explains Kenny Fowler from WBHY, Mobile, AL. “Great lyrics & it brings some spiritual meat to our rock playlist.”

Chris Goodwin from KRVK in Dallas/FT. Worth continues, "We literally crave songs that sound this good with lyrics like 'Page One'."

Minneapolis' Renowned Christian "Club 3 Degrees" Sold to AEG Live

There wasn't much reason for Joe Litvag to show a music critic around the spacious kitchen at the Brick nightclub, except for one important detail: the new walk-in beer cooler.

"That's one thing we did have to add," noted the senior vice president at AEG Live.

The giant promotions company that owns or co-owns everything from London's O2 Arena to Los Angeles' Staples Center -- oh, and the L.A. Lakers, too -- AEG is staking a much bigger claim on Minneapolis in the form of the Brick.

The 2,100-capacity Warehouse District venue opens Monday with a sold-out concert by Jane's Addiction. It's housed in the former Club 3 Degrees, a nonalcoholic Christian music haven that probably wouldn't have let Marilyn Manson in the door (he plays the Brick May 18).

After a couple of years of shopping around for a smaller sister space to Target Center -- which AEG manages but the city owns -- Litvag said he was surprised to come across the "near-perfect" space "almost right under our noses.

"Not only was it a good-looking building, but all it really needed was a dusting and a little reconfiguring," he said.

The historic, brick-adorned, three-story building already had a top-notch audio system and lighting rig. It just required a few things, including a liquor license and extra bar space. AEG added a better-flowing entrance and larger stage and soundboard.

Kye Kye Performs "Broke" At Relevant Magazine Studio

With an eclectic blend of acoustic, electronica, ambient and even spoken word influences, the enigmatic band Kye Kye from Camas, Washington has forged a distinctive sound all their own. Lead vocalist Olga Yagolnikov has a style reminiscent of Ingrid Michaelson and, to a lesser extent, Brooke Fraser.

Kye Kye are friends and siblings. Their love for music was passed on from their parents. Their love for Christ was given to them from our Heavenly Father. They fuse the two and the result is Kye Kye. They experienced a personal encounter with Jesus Christ in 2009 which went down something like Acts 2:2. It was nothing short of profound. They know they have found the meaning of life, and know it is Eternal Life. John 3:16 tells us that this is the reason He came. Then in John 17;3 Christ expounds on what this truly means. "And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent."

Certain things happen in a persons life that are a result of an intimate relationship with God through Christ. One of those things is the desire to spread the good news of the Kingdom of God. As this relationship grows, a second set of desires tends to rise up in your heart. This desire is designed and tailored to you and grows for the very purpose of supporting the desire to pour out the gospel from within you.

Kye Kye is their second set of desires.

Michael Gungor Discusses Perspective & Art

Sometimes you have to take a step back in order to really see the beauty of something. From the ledge of the Grand Canyon, Beauty shines bright as the sun. She wears a dress of granite and sky with sparkling shoes made of rushing river. Her eyes shine bright as the sunbeams shade the giant cliffs and valleys with color and shadow, revealing scope and texture. Her hair smells like wildflowers in the crisp desert wind. It’s difficult to stand on the ledge of the Grand Canyon and not notice her blinding presence.

But if you hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and lay prostrate with your face against the rocky floor, you may notice that your awareness of her will soon begin to wane. You may find that all you see down there is rock. Maybe some dirt or a crawling bug. These are the threads of her dress, but up close, it’s easy to lose her essence in the details.

I find this to be true of art.

Todd Dulaney Releases New Single “Simply Amazing” Featuring Michelle Williams

On the heels of the success of his debut project “Pullin' Me Through” which produced “No Other Name”, the title track “Pullin' Me Through” and the worship anthem “My Everything”, the anticipated wait is over; Gospel recording artist Todd Dulaney releases the new single “Simply Amazing” featuring Grammy Award Winner Michelle Williams.

Simply Amazing is a labor of love for Dulaney. What God has done for him through his musical journey and in his relationship with him is simply amazing. Charting in the top forties on all three gospel music charts, nominated for ‘New Artist of the Year’ for the 2012-27th Annual Stellar Awards can only be described in two words “Just God.”

Dulaney is currently in the studio working on his second project. “This project clearly defines the sound of worship. This time around, I have embraced who God has called me to be, I AM a Worshipper. The last project, I was finding me and sharing my love for what God was doing in my life. This time He has shown Himself to me and he has taken over my life, so my heart is singing His praises. He IS AMAZING, says Dulaney”. Look for the full project in the fall of 2012.

Michelle Williams made her mark with the legendary R&B group Destiny's Child and is no stranger to the gospel music industry. Rooted and grounded in Christ, she represents the kingdom of God. Michelle’s first two gospel releases "Heart To Yours" (2002) and “Do You Know” (2004) topped the Billboard Gospel charts and touched the hearts of many.

KJ-52 Set To Release 8th Studio Album

After 11 years in the music industry and more than 575,000 albums sold, hip-hop veteran KJ-52 will be releasing his eighth studio album Dangerous on BEC Recordings on March 26. After thriving through the seamless transition between a cutting edge newcomer at the tip of the 2000s to one of today’s most respected and ambitious rap/hip-hop heroes, KJ-52 continues pushing the musical and lyrical envelope. In addition to KJ overseeing the album, it includes tag teams with legendary producers Tedd T. (Mute Math, Delirious, Van Halen) and Aaron Sprinkle (Deftones, Hawk Nelson, Jeremy Camp).

“The theme that runs throughout the record is two fold,” states charismatic KJ-52. “The story’s set up with someone calling into a radio show and interviewing me about both the things out there that are dangerous to us and our faith, but also on the flip-side, of God calling us to live dangerously for Him. We have to be careful that we don’t give into the world, which is like drinking poison out of a gold cup. But as Christians, we can’t go along with the status quo or play it safe. There’s no room for laziness or complacency.”

While it would be easy for the six-time Dove Award winner and sought after collaborator (TobyMac, Newsboys, Thousand Foot Krutch) to rest on his laurels after more than a decade in the game, he aggressively walks that talk across Dangerous, while offering both listeners of faith and the mainstream scene plenty of reasons to relate. Dangerous also chronicles a series of compelling issues like drugs, divorce and racism, even the prejudice that sometimes pops up within the church’s walls. The latter is particularly evident across “They Like Me,” a collaboration with the Grammy nominated Lecrae.

Looking back on his career, KJ-52 reflects on what it means to have career endurance, especially as tastes and trends change practically overnight and many of his previous peers have since tapered out of the spotlight.

“Eleven years is really a lifetime in rap years,’” he suggests. “I think it’s a result of a lot of things, in part staying in tune with the fans, listening to them, listening to what’s going on musically, always staying on the road and looking to the future. Throughout it all, God’s provided and expanded my platform and He’ll continue to do that until it’s time to move on to whatever’s next.”

KJ-52 will take this new album on the road as he’ll be performing at the upcoming 2012 REVOLVE teen girl conference as well as the 4thirty1 Experience.

Rhema Soul Set To Release New Album

The hip-hop group Rhema Soul is set to release their fourth recording on March 27 via Universal Christian Music Group/220 Entertainment Group/Good City Music. Entitled RED, the project was produced by Andy Anderson (TobyMac, Group One Crew) along with newcomers Rey King and A.D. All thirteen songs on the album were written or co-written by the members of Rhema Soul: Butta, K-Nuff and juanlove. The first radio single from RED for CHR/Rock stations will be “No Walking Away,” written by Rhema Soul & Anderson. The song “Need An Answer” will be serviced to Rhythmic Radio and the first music video will be the song “Break Out.”

“Rhema Soul is a new breed of hip hop,” says producer Andy Anderson. “They are innovative chance-takers who are really going to carve out their own niche in hip hop. I'm excited for their career.”

Together now for over six years, Rhema Soul is based out of South Florida. The trio of two men and one woman recorded their first project in 2007 entitled Worn Soles, featuring the successful radio single “All You Are” with Hillsong United. Their follow-up project the next year, Dope Beats, Good News, included the innovative song “Steez” which was nominated as a favorite video by the Gospel Music Channel. And 2010’s, Fingerprints , offered up more personal songs from the group, including the provocative song “Fly Away.” The group opened up painful moments in their individual lives in an emotional music video of the tune, where K-Nuff describes his parent’s difficult marriage; juanlove makes a statement about teenage sex; and Butta reveals the sexual abuse she suffered as a child.

The trio all came from youth and worship leader backgrounds, as well as strong ties to missionary work. They traveled with the organization One Hope (OneHope.net) for nearly two years, ministering to needy children in South Africa, Russia, Eastern Europe, and the United Kingdom. Rhema Soul has also been involved with Hope in Motion, founded by KJ52’s drummer Pedro LaTorre. The Hope In Motion team visits public and private schools with a dynamic presentation of music and dance, opening doors to help counsel students who are suicidal, depressed, or have been bullied.

RED will be available in CBA stores as well as iTunes and other online music services. For more information, visit RhemaSoul.com.

Critically-Acclaimed Book To Be Released In Paperback and Kindle Versions

Source: Adams PR Group

Lederer Books/Messianic Jewish Publishers has announced that the critically-acclaimed book, The Conversation: An Intimate Journal of the Emmaus Encounter, will be released in paperback this month for the reduced retail price of $9.99. The book will also be available to Kindle customers this summer. The book garnered praise from both critics and scholars as one of the most “realistic” historical fiction treatments of the Emmaus Road encounter. Author, speaker and apologist, Judy Salisbury, wrote the book as a first-person account of the unnamed disciple in the Luke 24 account. She readily admits that attributing words to Jesus apart from Scripture was a daunting task, but to solidify its Scriptural integrity, Salisbury included over 80 footnotes in the book, representing over 200 scriptural passages.

“I tried not to put any more words into the Stranger’s (Jesus’) mouth than were necessary to move the story along,” says Salisbury. “And ultimately, I felt a great weight of responsibility on my shoulders for writing a fictional book with the Risen Lord as the main character.”

With a cover design made to resemble a personal journal, The Conversation: An Intimate Journal of the Emmaus Encounter, is available to order via www.messianicjewish.net, as well as through various major national distributors such as Ingram, STL, Anchor, CBD, and Baker & Taylor, among others. Both Salisbury and Rabbi Barry Rubin, President of Messianic Jewish Publishers, believe this book is an important tool for evangelical Christians, Messianic Jews, and curious non-believers who seek answers.

“This book is for anyone who seeks answers to Jesus’ identity,” says Salisbury. “It is for Christians, Messianic Jews, and anyone interested in knowing more about the life of Jesus. It is truly an impacting Easter account that can be given as a gift for evangelism or to simply answer questions for themselves and others. This book is also the perfect gift for our Jewish friends because it answers actual objections many of them have.”

Salisbury is the founder of Logos Presentations and has previously authored Reasons for Faith and was a contributing author for Is Your Church Ready?, co-edited by Dr. Norman Geisler and Ravi Zacharias. Salisbury is a certified lay counselor through the American Association of Christian Counselors, and for four years, co-hosted two radio programs. She is on the board of directors for the International Society of Women in Apologetics (ISWA) as a trainer and adviser. Salisbury has been interviewed on a variety of radio and television programs. She also debated an atheist and a Muslim on Lee Strobel’s national television program Faith Under Fire. Plans are in the works for Salisbury to do interviews and book signings in select markets in the next few weeks.

Based in Maryland, the mission of Messianic Jewish Communications is two-pronged: Reaching out to Jewish people with the message of Messiah and teaching non-Jewish people about their Jewish roots. The company includes various divisions to accomplish these goals including Lederer Books/Messianic Jewish Publishers, the only full-fledged Messianic Jewish publishing house. Messianic Jewish Resources International distributes a wide variety of books, videos, cassettes, CDs, educational computer software, Judaica, gifts from Israel and more.
