Distribution 101 - Part 4

So what is the best course of action for independent artists to take going forward? It depends on who you ask. Now that we’ve explored distribution, major label deals and the like over the course of the last three installments of the series, I’ll offer my vision of the future for success as an independent artist or label.

There’s no doubt the indie revolution is upon us. It was recently announced that 194 of the total 387 total non-producer nominations for the 54th Annual Grammy Awards were given to independent artists/labels. That’s half of all the nominations and a far cry from the dominance of the majors not uncommon only a few years ago! So that means virtually every independent artist/label now has a shot, right? Wrong. Only independent artists/labels which operate at a high level will ever have a shot at “winning the prize.”

The stark reality is that success normally doesn’t just happen by accident. Success is usually planned and almost always earned. In “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen R. Covey, the author stresses the premise that long-term success is a fruit which springs forth from good character – a collection of habits formed by the intersection of knowledge, skill and desire. Individually as independents, we must pursue knowledge and the level of skill relative to our craft if we wish to succeed. This is where desire, the third element of character, comes into play. Desire (also known as a “strong work ethic”) is the element in the equation which transforms knowledge and skill into material success. Knowledge and skill, without desire, will often bring nothing more than broken dreams. As independent label executive Troy Edwards from 3HP Records often says, “we must seek to work in excellence.” In other words, we must combine knowledge, skill and desire if we are to succeed in virtually any endeavor. After all, Isaac Newtons’ First Law (the Law of Intertia) states that an object at rest tends to stay at rest. But what does this all mean practically? Why am I quoting authors and physicist in an article about music distribution?

Fundamentally, there are certain elements which must be in place to lay the groundwork for success. Under the new indie paradigm, the common understanding seems to be that indie artists/labels must move from dependence (relying on others) to independence (self-sufficiency / self-support). But that is a short-sighted position and can be highly counter-productive. In reality, the independent artist/label must move from dependence to interdependence (a state of cooperation with others in pursuit of a common goal). Major labels have played an important role in the music industry for many years. Even though they’re often seen as the “evil overlord,” there are many aspects of the major label structure which can be implemented within the emerging indie model. We don’t need to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Many major label opponents on the far end of the spectrum advocate the downfall of any intermediary between the artist and the fan. On the other end of the spectrum, there are those who wish to maintain the antiquated structure of yesteryear at any cost. But I believe the best solution is to be found somewhere in the middle through which we can embrace the industry’s wild, new frontier while maintaining respect for some of the key proven realities of the old model. Most importantly, marketing is essential in creating success.

Given the fact that the two scarcest elements within the independent scene are knowledge and finances, it’s unreasonable to assume that the average indie musician or label has the capacity to achieve great things without entering into interdependent relationships with others who possess that which is lacking. Entrepreneurs are rushing to fill the void created by the faltering major label structure. Sites like Kickstarter and Slice of the Pie have been developed to provide a way for artists/labels to fund upcoming projects. And there are a host of great knowledge-based sites out there like Hypebot and Music Think Tank dedicated to providing solid information on key aspects of the emerging independent music industry. Finally, there are online independent communities like the CCM Indie site, We Are Indie Christian Community and Jesus Wired popping up all over the internet where independent artists/labels can come together to learn more about the industry, share ideas and support one another.

At CLG, our goal as an independent distributor is to educate and equip artists/labels so they may take the knowledge we provide and use it to further their music ministries. We exist to help those who are willing to help themselves by developing the level of work-ethic and character necessary for success in a very competitive industry. In my years of experience I’ve come across many artists who simply want to “show up and sing.” If that’s your mindset and you intend to pursue a career in music as an independent you might want to consider another career choice. The prize will ultimately go to those who have taken the time and effort to become properly motivated, skilled and educated. So it is in your best interest to form a good, solid team, work toward establishing a specific set of goals and then take bold and informed actions toward meeting those ends. Use proven industry service providers (radio promoters, publicity agents, etc.) if and when you can afford to do so. Book as many shows as possible even if you have to perform for free at first.

Finally, I will state that, as usual, the Christian industry lags behind the trends being set in the secular industry. As previously mentioned, half of the Grammy nominations this year were awarded to independents. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for Dove Award nominations. The majors still have a bit of a choke hold on the Christian industry and scant few indies are being nominated. But you can’t stop progress. The trends will infiltrate the Christian industry more fully and independents will begin to receive the recognition they deserve. Ultimately, if you perform for an Audience of One, you’ll never fall short anyway. But keep this in mind: “and let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” (Galatians 6:9)

Introducing: Jesus Wired: Indie Hits! Vol. 1

For Immediate Release

CHREMATIZO LABEL GROUP & JESUS WIRED ENTERTAINMENT RELEASE INDIE COMPILATION ALBUM
Companies Join Forces to Release “Jesus Wired: Indie Hits! Vol. 1”

(Nashville, Tenn.) November 25, 2011 – Nashville-based Christian entertainment companies Chrematizo Label Group and JesusWired Entertainment are set to release an independent compilation album November 29th containing eighteen tracks from former major label and other established artists, as well as notable up-and-coming stars of today and tomorrow.

Currently home to CLG Distribution, Jacob’s Well Records, Trendency Records and Voluminous Records, Chrematizo Label Group is partnering with Christian digital media upstart JesusWired Entertainment to bring a compilation of truly exciting and viable independent content to the marketplace. In the vein of best-selling compilations like WOW Hits and Now Hear This, the Jesus Wired: Indie Hits! series is poised to become an ongoing must-have collection for Christians devoted to truly artistic music and the discovery of artists underrepresented through traditional mediums.

Chrematizo Label Group President David C. Coleman states, “we’re very excited to be working with Jesus Wired Entertainment on the release of this brand new compilation series. Personally, I’ve always found sampler and compilation albums to be a truly effective discovery mechanism for much of the most credible underground content. Cross-promotion is also a great facet of these types of releases.”

From legendary Black Gospel pioneer Keith Pringle to some of CCM’s past, present and future stars, the compilation is loaded with exceptionally artistic music. Former Word/Myrrh Records artist Miss Angie returns with the brilliant dance/pop single “Kick Drum.” Matt Papa, formerly of Centricity/Spin360, brings the uncompromising spirit of Keith Green back to Christian music through unabashedly Christ-centered lyrics. And BET’s “Sunday’s Best” semi-finalist Maurice Griffin demonstrates why he is a colossal force to be reckoned with. But that’s just the beginning. Some of the newest and most gifted Holy Hip-Hop artists from the genre bring a message of hope to the streets through lyrical, rhythmic poetry. Former Wu-Tang/Killa Bees collaborator 7vnseal adopts a compelling “Christian Soldier” mindset and manifests a level of street credibility rarely found in Gospel Rap. And the word-for-word King James Bible rap recitals of John The Rap’tist are truly something to behold.

Video: "I Write" by John The Rap'tist

Check out this dope video by John The Rap'tist. John takes King James Bible scripture and raps it verbatim over beats produced by former Jive and Universal/Motown Recording Artist Talib "Taz" Kareem from the group Imagin. Preview the full album on iTunes by clicking HERE.

John The Rap’tist (JTR) and “Taaz” team up to integrate the “soul’d out” sound of Rap and R&B with the unadulterated Word of God on this brand new release. Nine chapters of the Word of God are contained within eight slammin’ tracks including “I Write,” a song with a corresponding video receiving national and international airplay on major video outlets across the globe. Throughout the course of the album, John recites the epistles of 1st, 2nd and 3rd John, Jude and Philemon verbatim! In this way, JTR uses the universal language of music as a vehicle to address the culture without compromise, depositing the eternal message of God’s love in hopes of fulfilling the promise of 1st John 2:14—”and the word of God abideth in you and ye have overcome the wicked one.”

From guest appearances on New York City’s Star 99.1 FM to hosting the video countdown show “Xtreme Video Zone” on JCTV, John is having an incredible impact on the Christian and Secular scenes alike as he walks in the favor of the Lord. “One of my many gifts is my music, but my calling is to preach Jesus Christ and Him crucified, as well as His resurrection power!” With ministry-centered goals and a prophetic gift to speak to the masses, John’s goal is to move well beyond merely reflecting culture through rap by allowing the Holy Spirit to transform culture through music.

Indie Artist Promotional Tip #2

Indie Artist Promotional Tip #2
From CLG Distribution

You need to be thinking about ways to promote your self/band every step of the way.

Distribution 101 - Part 3

Independence is defined as a state of being free from outside control and authority. For the independent musician, remaining independent can be incredibly liberating and extraordinarily burdensome – all at the same time. For those with a fierce work ethic and independent mindset, they wouldn’t change it for the world. These free spirits embrace this model of distribution and attack the task with vigor. But what are the advantages and disadvantages for independent musicians contemplating a proper course of action for their next album release?

First, I’ll focus on the advantages in remaining totally independent and free from entanglement with the industry establishment. On the upside, virtually every step of the process is controlled by the artist and, as a result, the artist maintains complete creative control. Of course, this can bring about results ranging from sheer brilliance to unmitigated disaster depending upon the competency of the individual at the helm. For virtually any musician, the lure of maintaining full control over the songwriting, production, instrumentation and marketing is certainly enticing and, ultimately, cost-effective. If successful, the payout per unit will often dwarf that of label artists. In recent years, “DIY” artists have come up with some very creative ways to compete in the marketplace, from “seeding the field” by giving away free music to allowing the consumer to name his or her own price. These tactics and many others have been used to successfully market and promote independent music and create sustainable careers. But, as always, the key to breaking through at any level is to create music that translates with the public. Proverbs 10:4 states “poor is he who works with a negligent hand, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.” Great music coupled with an unrelenting drive to succeed will ultimately find an audience.

That being said, there is a huge downside to remaining totally independent. Record labels and traditional distributors exist for a reason and have historically served an essential role by providing two crucial elements: (1) financial resources and (2) the knowledge to develop and implement an effective marketing plan. Most independent artists are not well-funded, well-informed or accomplished enough in key facets of the business to create meaningful success for the long-term. Producers, songwriters, radio promoters, publicity agents and other crucial service providers often take a rough stone and polish it into a marketable gem for public consumption. As music fans, we often don’t realize or simply dismiss the relevance of the various team members who contribute to the success of our favorite artists. We tend to assume the brilliance resides solely with the artist. But, much like the musician who spends hours upon hours mastering a musical instrument, these industry professionals spend entire lives perfecting their craft and often have a monumental impact on the final outcome. The point here is that virtually any successful artist needs to build a competent team in order to prosper. Proverbs 11:14 states “in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” An effective team can take the raw talent of an artist and refine it into something exceptional.

For those who are savvy and persistent enough to stick with self-distribution, the efforts can pay off immensely. But very few artists are able to properly engage all facets of the creation, marketing and promotion of their music, and scant few have historically broken through pursuing this course. If you plan on remaining independent, it is wise to work toward assembling a competent team that can help refine your craft and market your content to as broad an audience as possible. Never underestimate the power of marketing. And never underestimate the power of teamwork.

Mosaic Unveils "Teach Us"

Lush Harmonies, Scripture-Infused Lyrical Content
Embellish Acclaimed Band's Latest Release

Nashville, Tenn. (Oct. 18, 2011) - Critically acclaimed Christian band Mosaic releases its third project, Teach Us, today on the independent Mosaic Music label and through CLG Distribution.

Even prior to its release, the new CD is generating a buzz in the industry and drawing comparisons to such musical luminaries as The Civil Wars, Alison Krauss, Avalon and Selah. Influential website ChristianityToday.com declares, "The mix of harmonies is nothing short of sublime, shifting from joyful to pensive to praise-filled, fitting just as comfortably on country radio one minute as a more straight-up CCM station the next."

Mosaic — whose lineup includes Devon Graves, vocals/piano; the husband and wife team of Patrick Lockwood, vocals/acoustic guitar and Molly Lockwood, vocals/piano; and husband and wife Jonathan Taylor Martin, vocals/acoustic guitar and Emily Martin, vocals — never intended to become the next big thing in Christian music.

The five musicians originally met as students at Belmont University, where, although they hailed from different parts of the country and had distinctly different musical backgrounds and tastes, they realized they shared a common desire to communicate the truth of God's Word as revealed in the Scriptures.

When they gathered together to share their music, amazing things just seemed to happen. One such night of musical fellowship resulted in their debut CD, a collection of Christmas songs called Until the Son of God Appears, which they originally recorded as a Christmas present for their parents. The CD then led to a month-long Christmas tour, and they have been on the road ever since.

The musicians officially became a full-time ministry in 2009 and released As Long As It Is Day, Mosaic's first CD of original compositions. They have toured unceasingly since, honing their lush harmonies and refining their songwriting chops, while maintaining their ministry focus to encourage and edify others with the truth of God's Word.

"We saw God working through our music and blessing it, and we realized that this was a greater calling than we had expected," Graves says of the band's decision to pursue a career in full-time ministry.

"We realized that, in order to be good stewards of this calling, we would need to commit all of our time to writing, recording our music and organizing our ministry in order to get this thing off the ground," adds Jonathan Taylor Martin.

"People always ask how we come up with our arrangements," says Emily Martin. "We have a lot of musical minds at work within the group. Basically, we just sit in a living room and sing for hours. The person who wrote the song usually guides the vision for the arrangement, but we all contribute our ideas until the song feels complete."

"Each song carries the personal flair of the writer, but because we arrange as a group, there is a consistency to our music," adds Molly Lockwood.

The band combines lyrical content relying heavily on Scripture with rich, complex harmonies to produce Mosaic's signature sound.

"We believe that God's Word empowers prayer, ignites faith, and fuels our worship," explains Patrick Lockwood. "We exist as this family called Mosaic to be musical missionaries of sorts. We exist to teach the Word of God through our music."

That mission can be clearly heard with just a cursory listen to any of the songs on Teach Us. "One," the project's energetic opener, draws heavily on Ephesians 4:4-6 for its declaration that there is "One hope, one faith, one body, one Spirit of the living God." The project's title was derived from the song "Teach Us To Love," a lovely, peace-filled prayer-song drawn from John 15:13 and 1 John 4:7-11. Mosaic slides easily between genres, evoking a gentle country vibe on "Japheth Song," light and breezy pop on "Love Will Never Fail," acoustic folk on "Trust the Lord," and lilting jazz licks on "Fear the Lord."

While the musical stylings may be diverse, the band's sparkling vocals and lyrical integrity create a consistency that unifies the project. Each song on Teach Us flows into the next, creating a seamless, worshipful experience that includes praise and adoration, supplication, worship and benediction.

CLG Offers Great Pricing On CD/DVD Replication!

Chrematizo Label Group/CLG Distribution is now able to offer exceptional pricing on CD & DVD Replication orders of 1,000 units or more. Here are some of the advantages of dealing with CLG for your replication needs:
  • All DVD or CD pricing includes up to 5 color imprint on the CD face (silkscreen or offset printing). The white flood coat makes the fifth color. Most companies charge more for offset printing if they even offer it. Offset is optimal for photo type art (i.e. landscape or a face), while silkscreen is best for spot colors because it's more vibrant than offset.

  • Our variety of packaging choices including: jewel boxes, digipaks, mailers, sleeves, wallets, DVD Amaray cases, security envelopes, albums and many more.

  • All orders are shipped in industry-standard sub and master carton configurations. Most other replicators up-charge for this.

  • All orders include a free UPC Code for each title (if necessary).

  • There are no film charges for the imprint. Many companies charge a setup charge.

  • The packaging is typically offset print except for the insert/tray card in quantities of a 1,000. All other quantities and other packages are offset, not digital. Offset printing looks better because it is not as crisp-looking.

  • Turnaround is very consistent and typically shorter than the competition.

  • The presses are very new and are German-made -- the best in the industry. Having the newest technology results in a flatter disc which increases playability on all players (even suspect players). This also allows for a better print image as well.

  • Production capacity is 300,000 units a day -- 24/7 Monday through Friday. Overall capacity is filled 60% on the average, so it's possible to take on huge jobs (with some advance notice) without affecting other customers.

  • The company is ISO certified and has all licensing/certifications for CD/DVD and piracy.
We also offer:
  • Flash memory and diskette duplication, labeling and packaging, including silk-screening of both the label and shutter surfaces in one or more ink colors.

  • Videotape duplication in NTSC, PAL and SECAM formats, Macrovision anti-copy protection, open and closed captioning services, video digitizing, editing, plus complete video packaging.

  • E-Book production, DVD authoring and pre-mastering using the versatile Sonic Solutions systems. This is our service to producers, developers and marketers of content in this media format.

  • Art design for CD/DVD packaging.

Jon Bauer's "Forevermore" Streets Today!

Check out Jon Bauer's highly anticipated brand new album on iTunes now!

Canada’s best & brightest artists have certainly made a major impact on the American Christian music scene. While it is no secret that Canada has produced a bumper crop of uniquely talented artists in many genres over the years, the country’s batting average in Christian music has been especially noteworthy.

And now, in 2011, Canadian singer-songwriter Jon Bauer is stepping up to the plate. Jon’s fourth worship-focused recording, FOREVERMORE, is also his U.S. debut, with songwriting that has been likened to familiars in the industry like Chris Tomlin or Casting Crowns’ Mark Hall, this collection of songs is already making an impact. Produced by one of the industry’s most sought-after producers, 2010 Dove Award-winning producer Rusty Varenkamp (Tenth Avenue North, Meredith Andrews), FOREVERMORE features 10 selections with 8 written or co-penned by Jon. “My heart is to encourage people that worship is more than music. It’s a lifestyle, and it’s a choice. We need to look for ways to serve God and serve others, representing Him to this hurting world.”

Distribution 101 - Part 2

Last month I discussed two distinctly different types of physical music distribution – “traditional” and “one-stop.” This month I will delve a little deeper into some of the various deals potentially offered by traditional distributors. While it remains true that opportunity has never been greater for the average indie musician or label, a traditional distribution deal is still very hard to come by. A general rule of thumb indicates that an artist or label typically surrenders control and profitability in direct proportion to the amount of outside investment agreed upon and/or required to record, market and promote an album. For the purpose of this segment on distribution, the terms “distributor” and “record label” are often used interchangeably.

In a “packaging and distribution deal” (sometimes referred to as a “P&D deal”), the artist or label maintains more control over a project since the distributor is only fronting the costs for manufacturing. Due to the limited exposure, the distributor allows more freedom to the artist/label since the risk for marketing and promoting the album is assumed by the artist or label.

Under a “profit-sharing” model, more of the burden is assumed by the distributor. The artist or label will typically enter the agreement with a finished project in-hand and maintain ownership of the master recording. The distributor agrees to invest in the marketing and promotion of the project and profits are then shared between distributor and artist/label.

In a “license deal,” the artist or label licenses the rights to exploit the content to a distributor or label while retaining ownership of the master recording and songwriting revenues. Once the license term concludes, the rights then revert to the artist or label. This model can be very advantageous if the artist/label is able to properly market and promote the title independently.

The next model is what most people would be familiar with when discussing a “major label deal.” In this model, the label/distributor funds virtually every aspect of the recording and marketing process and, as such, inherits a great deal of influence over each and every aspect of the recording and marketing processes. One of the hot-button issues for many past, present and future recording artists operating under this model is the ownership of the publishing rights and copyright of the master recording. Most deals under this model require that the artist or label surrender ownership of the master recording and, often, the publishing rights as well. If and when this occurs the distributor will maintain ownership indefinitely for all aspects of the master recording.

One of the newest models in vogue is the “360 deal.” Under this model, the artist is basically “branded” by a team consisting of artist management, producers, promoters and a marketing team. The team assumes “ownership” of the brand and work together to create success on behalf of the artist. At this level, virtually any and all merchandise branded with the artist’s name or likeness becomes a profit center for the label. This model involves the most financial investment by the label/distributor and, proportionately, the least amount of creative control for the artist.

Next month I will discuss self-distribution and the truly independent artist.
